SHOP/WEBSITE DESIGN

This module builds right off the previous modules. Which makes the design process so much easier!

We have the clarity from the actions steps we took in Module One, and we’re going to use the same process we used to design our packaging for how to design our website and shop. It’s really that simple. When we have clarity, we have our map and it makes it so much easier to stay the course and not get off focus. Whereas a lack of clarity leads to wandering and winging every step.

If you skipped Module One or if you didn’t complete the action steps from that module then we can’t encourage you enough to go back and finish that up before moving forward. Trust us, awesome results follow clarity!

TAKE ME BACK TO MODULE ONE

IT’S LIKE

Let’s say you were going to make an investment into something, and it wasn’t a small investment it was the kind of investment where it would really hurt you financially if the investment when wrong. Now let’s say you sit down with your financial adviser, who is guiding you on how to invest your money, and they presented you with where they wanted you to invest your money. The investor is super excited and he has a really good “feeling” about this investment. He really thinks you can make a lot of money. But then you start to ask him questions and each answer is the same, “I don’t really know… I just really feel this is a good investment.” It becomes clear that your financial advisor is just guessing, and doesn’t have a clear plan for this new investment. But it’s your money on the line and just a warm fuzzy feeling isn’t enough to convince you to risk your money.

If we would require due diligence and a clear plan from our financial advisors, then why would we treat starting a business any different? We’re investing our money; doesn’t it seem like wisdom to have as much clarity as we can before you pull the trigger on this new investment?

That’s why we don’t just guess about how to design the shop and website! We go back to the description of our ideal customer and design a shop and website that they would resonate with! If you’re guessing here, your brand isn’t winning. So let’s go back to our list and go from there.

Here’s the example of our list of the description of our ideal customer:

EXAMPLE: Here’s an example of a description of an idea customer. Let’s call him William.

  • A dude
  • In his mid 30s
  • Married with young kids
  • Active
  • Wants to stay healthy
  • Eats right
  • He’s successful in his career
  • Not a suit and tie kind of guy
  • Cares about his family
  • Is a hard worker
  • Enjoys being outside
  • Has a high level of excellence
  • Enjoys time with his buddies
  • Committed to personal growth
  • Avid reader
  • Positive personality
  • Highly motivated

The more detailed you are with the description of your ideal customer the easier it will be to keep your branidng and design on point. Why? Becuase you’ll know exactly what your ideal customer will resonate with and what they won’t!

DESIGN BASED ON YOUR LIST

So, if this was your ideal customer, as you design your brand, you need to start by thinking about the type of shop/website that WILLIAM would resonate with. How would that look? What type of imagery, messaging, brands, quality, experience, etc. would William immediately respond well to?

Start writing it out, brain dump all your thoughts and ideas. You could even look back at the list you created in Module 2 (about package design). Because the list should be pretty much the same. Always, keep in mind that the brand should also reflect you, the founder. So, there should be a touch of your personality mixed into this as well.

You should also include the story of the brand, why you started it, why it means so much to you, etc. This story will create a powerful connection point. Meaning that your shop/website visitors will be able to make a connection with your brand on an emotional level.

Why do we care about that? Because buying choices are emotional decisions. So the more connection points you can create for your visitors, the better.

But make sure you understand us clearly here, we don’t mean manipulation, we mean honest and authentic connection points. If they aren’t then they will come across sleazy. People can sense authenticity and when it’s fake. Don’t be fake!

As we design the shop/website we constantly need to be asking ourselves, “would William resonate with this?” This is to keep your brand on point and consistent. This should be your mantra as you design your brand, embrace it:)

Again please, don’t fall into the idea that if you design it specifically for one person that you will be cutting out a bunch of other people. You will be narrowing your target but that is what will make your brand and packaging powerful. We say this all the time and we’ll say it again now, if you design your brand for everyone, you become the generic brand.

Generic brands are designed for the masses, and what do generic brands have to do to survive? They have to constantly be the cheapest option. Which means a constant price war. If that sounds appealing to you by all means design a generic brand, but if you want to design a brand that will have the ability to be an industry leader, then you better be specific when you design your brand and packaging.

FAILURE ISN’T FINAL. GET BACK UP AND KEEP GOING.

ACTION STEPS

Block out 30 minutes this week to write out our website design list. The list of the type of imagery, messaging, quality, brands, experience, etc. that your ideal customer would resonate best with. Then once you see a pattern, start to write out ideas for the look of your brand. What kind of style would it need to have, what kind of images would you need to use, what colors, what messaging should be used. Write it all out. The more specific you can be the more this will help the person you have designing your shop/website.

Because what you don’t want to happen is to show up to your designer with nothing and then they just wing it! Nope, you want to show up to your designer with specifics. And then when they show you what they came up with, ask yourself that golden question, “will this resonate with William?” Of course, you can insert the name of your own ideal customer here:)

So, make your lists, be specific and look for patterns. Then use all of that as your guide to the look of your brand and packaging.
